The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
