Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
