Intense Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to stay indoors as strong winds lash the country.

Powerful winds hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and forced officials to cancel over 100 aircraft departures, as reported by domestic outlets.

The winds are influencing the entire southern region and lower areas of the northern region, according to the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have issued uncommon severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in core zones including Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for more power and communication outages.

Extensive Destruction and Crisis Measures

This outage seems to be impacting homes mostly in the southern region, while agencies say that the electricity supply was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, and power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Flights entering and leaving the urban area have been cancelled because of the weather, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have issued a emergency situation, to facilitate recovery activities.

Yet the intense climate has forced them to modify certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Like conditions are impacting the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Officials have declared fire bans for fear of wildfires.
