The accused confessed to 17 charges at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

An individual who spiked sweets with sedative and provided them to youngsters at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two young males aged nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight youngsters and a grown-up became sick at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on Friday.

However, he denied one particular crime he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, described the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he ran.

Ruben conducted a "candy game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the man had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and minors had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "Recently" his stepson had worries about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel explained objects including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepson alerted the authorities about his worries.

She said Ruben proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.

The prosecutor said the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the stepson contacted the police again.

She said the defendant then played the "sweet game" in a room of five children.
