Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
