RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
